A frozen river cuts through a snowbound pine forest, and for three hours the sky above it will not sit still.
The aurora here behaves the way it does on a genuinely cold night. Green ribbons hang for a minute or two, drift west, then a violet curtain drops through them and the whole sky reorganises itself. Everything below stays exactly where it is. Snow sits heavy on the rocks along the bank, the pines hold their shape against the horizon, and the water moves slowly enough to keep a clean reflection of all of it.
Why there is no music on this one
Aurora scenes are almost always scored with piano and soft pads. That turns them into something you listen to. Take the music away and the same scene becomes somewhere you are, which is a different thing entirely and, we think, the more useful one.
So what you get instead is wind moving through the treeline, the occasional shift of water against stone, and a great deal of quiet. Closer to a window than a soundtrack.
When this one works best
Three hours is long enough to fall asleep to without the video ending and dropping you into an autoplay you did not choose. It also sits well on a second screen through long stretches of work, because there are no cuts, no sudden changes in brightness and nothing that pulls the eye away from what you are doing.
On a television in a dark room it does a decent job of changing the temperature of the whole space, which is really what winter ambience is for. If you plan to leave it running overnight, turn the screen brightness down a little first. The aurora is bright by nature and this scene carries a lot of contrast.
